Kaptain's Log : Kar Date : 25th August . Weight : 74.3 Kgs
Having spent over a year at 99 degree F gym and another year prior to that at Fitness One, i always had feeling of well being. But that was short lived today . Stuck int he gym in airconditioning and music may suck out some fat , but going out there and physically performing in the outdoors is a whole new ball game.
Prior to this only outdoor physical activity i had was 2 days of Ultimate Frisbee and one cricket match. This was half way through my previous years session at the gym. Felt good that i could run fast on the ground and the beach, jump and even field well (batting on the leg side is a different story).
So out of sheer curiosity and nakkal , registered for my first boot camp at the gym . Had seen a lot of pictures of the previous ones and it looked like fun . But pictures can be deceiving and i should have known that !!!
How does one prepare for a boot camp . I have no clue , but think you should avoid everything i did the previous day . A full pack of biryani for lunch and dinner (check my other blog soon) , potato chips , orange juice (no sugar and ice) , a packet of herbal ginger sweets (for my sore throat) and some whey from previous days workout , for which i happen to skip cardio as well .Wife thinks i shouldn't reduce more . First she wanted me to reduce , for health reasons , now to bulk up a bit , not like the hulk , but a bit. Women can never decide !!! .
Woke up at 5:00 slept , woke up again at 5:10 and got ready !!! Had a slice of whole grain bread from French loaf , which seemed to have shrunk to half its size over night. Just to be sure had a bottle of water with glucon d , just enough that i cannot taste the sweetness.
Got the music up and almost every radio channel has some bakthi song at that hour. USB in , car starts and started off with this awesome song .
On the way , could see so many people active at this hour . Business men starting off their day with supplies , walkers , joggers , and many cyclists. Do we really lack sports persons in india , a topic for another day !!!
Reached and had no clue where the landmark was , found the place and shriram along with the trainers from the gym . Only two for the day .
Started off with easy stretches , with a twist here an there. After that a bit of jogging , a few steps like marching and butt kicks , you get to kick your own butt !!! As the variations grew more intense , so did the sweat . The combo workouts seem to be the tough ones the burpee. All i could hear was burfee burfee !!! . The Pushups part was easy , but getting back to your feet was toughest . A jump and i let gravity do the rest. Pushups starting getting harder on the sand as you hand started moving away in the sand. Finished around 10 of these.
Went for i plank with a twist of the arm on each side so that they are in a straight line . I love the iron man exercise , so this was quiet easy.
Then the dreaded running started , first short burst run , then jog and then jog back and burst run again . Running initially was tough , but was easier on the way back once you got things rolling . Could be i just wanted this done with and ran to the finish line.
A few more running exercises were running on your sides and switching your body to the other side after two steps . This was fun. but on the way back you had to job in reverse and you have to keep looking back just like reversing our car.
Walking lunges. I know they are extremely helpfull as a full workout , but they are also extremely tiresome once done. This case i had to do the lunges and walk forward taking huge steps. Easily lost my footing a couple of times. This is tough enough in the gym , here it was tougher. Atleast if i fall here i fall on sand with no major impact .
Side ways sumo walk was another tough one. It looked easy when the trainer did it , but he was in the same position . I had to walk side ways all the way to the mark which was around 50 paces and once i was back i was happy until he said i had to do it the other side as well .
By this time i was too tired and was told not to sit at all . So kept walking a bit. Vision was blurry by now , not because of my blood pressure , but sweat on my glasses , which i could not wipe with my tshirt because that had more sweat !!!
Finally had to do a couple of the previous steps again . I was famished after 3 exercises , but shriram endured for one last one while i finally sat and finished the gatorade. After some stretches for which i could barely stand we had a brief chat were off .
Exhaustive yes , but if i had not done this , i would not know how much i can do and how far i can go. Being 30+ you feel it is tough to try these , but the trainers have an instinct and know how much one can endure . This trainer hasn't trained me , but knows of me cause some people have spoken about me doing the iron man stance (wording 'doing iron man' would have been awkward) for a long time and excessively sweating. Did not think people noticed as i am one quiet person at the gym . Read somewhere that you don't go there to chat , just workout.
After all that biryani , checked my weight and this is the least i have weighed so far. Was 74.6 prior to my birthday , but that shot up to 75.4 within a week of having 3 bouts of biryani and now back to the weight on the weight meter above.
Will i go again ???. Yes but only after increasing my running time at the gym.
